Nothing makes a place like its food. The state of Maryland is known as a “mini America,” having the coastal plain on the east, the piedmont plateau in the middle, and mountains to the west. Yet the food of Maryland is mainly attributed to its coastal region. When in Maryland, there’s no better time to eat the best dishes, snacks, and desserts around.
1. Steamed Crabs
There’s nothing so Maryland-like than steamed blue crabs (though since they’re steamed, the crabs are bright red.) Coated generously with the quintessential Maryland seasoning, Old Bay, the crabs can be picked and eaten at leisure by the dozen. However, discard the wooden mallet if you want to crack your crabs like a true Marylander.
2. Crab Cakes
For a fine dining experience, look no further than crab cakes. While each restaurant may season and cook their version a little differently, a Maryland crab cake is unlike any other kind in the country. Not breaded or mixed with vegetables, and seasoned with Old Bay and other spices, a Maryland crab cake is divine.
3. Maryland Crab Soup
Maryland crab soup is another classic. You can try cream of crab, Maryland crab soup, and a mix of the two. Cream of crab soup (also known as crab bisque) consists of little vegetables while having chunks of sweet lump crab. Maryland crab soup is tomato-based and comes with hearty vegetables, crab, and spices. These two soups together is just as delicious as either.
4. Pit Beef
Pit beef is a type of sandwich made with a hefty portion of thinly sliced beef, crispy on the outside and rare on the inside. It is typically served with horseradish and sometimes barbeque sauce on a roll.
5. Thrasher’s Fries
On the boardwalk of Ocean City Maryland resides one of the most famous French fries of all: Thrasher’s fries. Eaten with apple cider vinegar or salt alone, these potatoes are perfection.
6. Fisher’s Popcorn
Since 1937, Fisher’s Popcorn has been serving the most delectable popcorn in the land, and possibly the world. Located in Ocean City Maryland as well, its caramel flavor tops all.
7. Smith Island Cake
Smith Island Cake is Maryland’s official state dessert. Originating from Smith Island in the southern part of the Chesapeake Bay, this cake has 8-10 layers of yellow cake with chocolate frosting.
8. Berger Cookies
Baltimore is the home of the Berger cookie, which was developed by Henry Berger in the mid-1900s. It’s a simple cookie topped with chocolate fudge, and its taste will blow you away.
