Maryland Crab for Thanksgiving

Maryland Crab for Thanksgiving

What was the original Thanksgiving feast? Could crab have been a part of it?

You’re likely aware of many of the Thanksgiving staples we’ve all come to associate with the holiday. From turkey to mashed potatoes to cranberry sauce and beyond, there are plenty of culinary delights to look forward to (and be thankful for) when Thanksgiving rolls around. Something you may have never thought about or experienced, however, is seafood during this holiday. Even lifelong Marylanders have sometimes overlooked delicious Maryland crab cakes or other dishes prepared with crab during Thanksgiving. Here at Eastern Shore Crab Cakes, we continue to look for opportunities to celebrate the robust uses of Maryland crab—and we hope you’ll consider doing so yourself this Thanksgiving season!

Has Seafood Ever Been a Thanksgiving Meal?

Believe it or not, there is some doubt over whether or not turkey was even served during traditional Thanksgiving celebrations. What’s more interesting, though, is that the Native American diet included various seafood items, like lobster, clams, and shellfish, mussels, and even crab. While it’s difficult to know just what was served during original Thanksgiving celebrations, these regular parts of their diet may likely have snuck their way into Thanksgiving meals provided by the natives for pilgrims.

Crab cakes weren’t around just yet, but if you want to go truly traditional, consider adding steamed crabs, clams, or oysters. Other additions that can help you get in touch with the traditions behind this holiday include roasted pumpkin, butternut squash, ham, and roasted duck or goose. These are all fun ways to get in the spirit of what pilgrims may have really been chowing down on during this important holiday, but if you want to mix things up a bit, consider adding crab cakes to the mix.

Why Crab Cakes?

If you’re a Marylander, you likely have a big love for Maryland crab cakes just like we do. There’s only one problem: it’s so rare that you’ve got the entire family assembled to enjoy crab cakes together. Thanksgiving is one of those traditions that brings us together and is ideal for adding crab cakes into the mix. It’s also easy to pair with other mains, sides, desserts, and drinks, so you can be certain that your crab cakes won’t stand out from the rest of whatever you’ve got cookin’ up in the kitchen.
